When we reached our destination, our backdrop was in the shade so we made the best of it and really did well with the backlit sunshine on their left sides. I didn't use a flash as I really liked the backlit situation. Upon reflection, I think next time a snoot on their faces would help.

The shot in complete shade does look a little flat as far as the light and also your two subjects look a little far apart to me, they are at the edges of the frame and seem a little disconnected with all that space between them, but the second more close-up image with the backlighting looks great to me. I am sure a true "Strobist" would add 15 flashes or something like that, but I like it with the natural light! Maybe a large reflector would have added some fill light too...you just need to grow a couple more arms.
